Leo

Leo was full of sass, and life, and love. Leo loved to play, and to draw, and to write his alphabets. During his treatment, Leo especially loved the movie theater at CHOC where every day at 2:00, he could watch Cars 2, or The Incredibles 2, or Toy Story 2. Leo loved his parents and his brother Luis dearly. Leo was never happier than when his whole family was together, whether in the hospital or at Disneyland. We miss Leo every single day, and he will be ever present. Leo is forever with us!

Matthew

Matthew was an 18 yo fighter. He was diagnosed with ALL at age 14 and endured treatment for over 4 years. He happily lived with his adopted father, Richard, who created for Matthew a loving home. Matthew celebrated his graduation from high school and his official adoption day in his last year of life and made many friends along his journey. He will be an inspiration to Richard and his half brother and all who knew him and his gigantic warm smile. Matthew is forever with us!

A precious young boy with beautiful eye lashes, Steven died from an aggressive brain tumor at the young age of 15 months. He was the only child of Michelle and Marco. He was a happy, young boy with a wonderful laugh and he was loved by his grandparents , aunts, uncles and cousins. Steven passed away in the loving arms of his mother and father, with grandma and grandpa by their side. Steven is forever with us!

Alissa was a young lady with a beautiful smile. She was loved deeply by her mother and step father, her grandma and grandpa, her five siblings, her niece and her larger family. Brianna was cared for at Kaiser and CHOC. No matter where she was, she always had her devoted family at her side. Brianna was adored by her Mom, Dad, sister, family, and friends… and she stole our CHOC family’s hearts too. She was a quiet warrior throughout every day of her treatment. She and her sister were very close- Brianna was Layla’s role model. Brianna loved school and Disney movies (especially Coco and others that Did. Not. Have. Princesses!) Brianna will be missed dearly, and she will forever be in our hearts. Brianna is forever with us!

Elle was a beautiful and spirited young girl who was diagnosed in April of 2021 with a DIPG. Elle and her twin brother, Greyson, moved from Toronto Canada to California with their loving parents. These two were the light of their parents' eyes and the best of friends. Elle loved to be outside and active and busy. She was energetic, strong willed, smart and beautiful. She battled her disease for nearly a year before dying in March of 2022 at home with her parents and brother by her side. Elle is forever with us!

Parker was radiant- a ray of light, exuberant, joyful, hilarious, and absolutely adored by his loving parents and beloved dog, as well as by his extended family, friends, CHOC family, and everyone fortunate enough to have met him. He faced so many challenges in his short life, and gave them all a run for their money. At his recent celebration of life, his parents shared that more people attended it than attended their own wedding- Parker's positive impact was, and always will be, immense. He will never be forgotten and will always be treasured. Parker is forever with us!

Arturo

Arturo was a 21 year old young man who was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2018 and died after the disease spread to his lungs three years later. Arturo was close to his parents and close to his extended family. He was particularly close to his three younger brothers and one sister. Arturo enjoyed time outdoors, especially fishing with his father, brothers and uncles. His family suffered a great deal of loss this year with his paternal grandmother dying of cancer and his favorite uncle dying of COVID just months before the loss of Arturo. Those that knew him will remember his gentle smile, his soft and kind voice, and the closeness of a special family. Arturo is forever with us!

Alexis was a very sweet and kind-hearted young man who was very recently diagnosed with leukemia. His loving parents were always by his side, and his older sister was always providing support to him via Facetime during his admissions. Alexis participated in ROTC and loved playing video games. He dreamed of graduating from high school, serving in the Navy, and pursuing engineering. Alexis was adored and treasured by his loving, devoted family and by all who had the privilege of meeting him, including our CHOC Oncology family. Alexis will be missed dearly. Dear Childhood Cancer, A year ago today you came into our lives. Slowly you have caused us so much pain and heartache. In the time span of only 12 months you caused Jocelyn to go through 4 craniotomies, surgery to put in a chest port, surgery to put in a shunt, 2 rounds of radiation, tons of infusion treatments, chemo, hospital stays, MANY medications, and much more! Throughout this year she has also suffered hair loss, body pain, headaches, stomach pain, loss of strength on her right and left side, loss of time with friends & family, & most heartbreaking of all you took away her ability of being on the soccer field and doing what she LOVES most!! The tears we have lost because of you are painful to recall, not to mention all the worries and concerns we saw and continue to see in her siblings, Julissa and Robert & our family. You’ve caused so much worry and hurt. HOWEVER, we don’t write this to focus on the negatives…we write this to let you know that a lot of good has also come out of all of this!!

Sophia, a scholar-athlete, college bound with dreams to play softball collegiately and pursue her dreams, had her whole life ahead of her. God however had other plans for our beautiful daughter.

As many of you know Sophia’s journey in life unexpectedly changed forever. Nevertheless, Sophia remained that sassy warrior through it all. Playing the most important game of her life, Sophia continued her tenacious, brave, and strong attitude no matter what pitch was thrown at her. She always kept her head in the game and finally got a pitch she loved that brought our beautiful courageous daughter home to God. And now we celebrate the homecoming of our baby girl’s sweet, beautiful soul.

Nadine was born on August 7, 2000 and she passed September 18, 2021. She had just turned 21 when she found out she had cancer. She had her life set for herself, She knew what she wanted and she was gonna get it no matter what. She had a bucket list of things she wanted to try and do. She wanted to travel, try new foods, go to Disneyland and see her favorite artist billie eilish. She had it all set but life had other plans for her and she accepted that even with the fear she knew she was the strong one for this path in her life to happen. Some things about Nadine was that she had the biggest heart you could ever imagine and she loved every flaw and beauty of a person.

John was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma and Hyper IgE Syndrome (a rare immunodeficiency disease) when he was young. In March 2021, he underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant, but due to complications, he remained in the hospital for months. Since day 1, his body contracted different infections that affected his lungs, liver, bladder, and kidneys. As a result, he underwent constant blood transfusions, leaving him physically depleted. For John, every day was a struggle to do the simplest things - like eat, sit up, or even some days open his eyes; however, he stayed strong through it all.

Samuel Lee Quiñones was an eleven-year-old boy that endured a battle with brain cancer for the past year and a half. After three brain surgeries, and bouts with chemotherapy, he passed away one month shy of his twelfth birthday. He loved Spiderman, and being his dad's sidekick. His favorite times were enjoying Angels games, and eating at Hotties Pizza with his family. He is survived by his father and older brother. All he ever wanted was to see everybody happy. Johanna had been accepted to college in New York to study to become a writer when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of her left arm. She was a very bright young woman with a strong heart and a determined spirit. She was determined to fight her disease and endured many months of chemotherapy, an arm amputation, lung surgeries and radiation. She fought for nearly two years, seeking any treatment possible, and had the never ending support of her younger sister, mother and father. She unfortunately died before her sister's quincinero, which Johanna was planning for her. Johanna is forever with us!

Damian was our 7 year old little dude who battled a neuroepithelial tumor and had many long stays here at CHOC. During his admissions, he loved playing Mario 3D World on Wii, watching Toy Story, and participating in art classes. Some of his favorites were making tie dye shirts and drawing pictures for his mom. He loved to play the interactive games hosted by Seacrest Studios and was frequently broadcasted across CHOC's tv channel. He will be greatly missed by all who cared for him and got to know his beautiful soul and fun personality. Damian will forever be with us!

Sixta

Sixta was born in Mexico, March 30 2006, she was named in honor of her great-grandmother Sixta Santana. She was an exceptionally smart and healthy baby. Those who knew Sixta describe her as a friendly and timid girl, there were never any complaints of her from anybody. She attended preschool in Mexico then moved to California and attended elementary school in Santa Ana. Learning a new language was not impossible for such an intelligent little girl. In Diamond elementary school Sixta's interest for the violin bloomed, so she continued to play it in Carr intermediate school’s mariachi and orchestra. Through the middle school years Sixta was involved in extracurricular a ctivities and stayed after school. Aside from being an A-grade student, Sixta was a role model for her siblings and an extra set of hands for her parents. She would wake up everyday at 5 in the morning to get ready for school, then wake up her siblings so they’d get ready.
